GIS in Support of Baltimore City Rezoning Process
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Anna Krzystyniak - Sobiewska

This presentation is a brief description of the process to create the Baltimore City Building Typology Map. This map was created to serve as a tool to identify spatial patterns of development that would be created by existing and proposed Zoning regulation.

In 2005, Baltimore City Planning Department began a process to review, rewrite and replace the existing zoning code. New zoning codes should include form base approaches and design standards that offer opportunities to neighborhoods and also reflect the variety of existing building types.

In the summer of 2007, Baltimore City’s Urban Planners, together with interns, students and GIS professionals identified 19 building types. Using GIS software we created a Building Typology Map.

This map is an invaluable tool which can be used by city planners to understand how a three – dimensional space created by city buildings, pavement and landscaping work together.
