How DRCOG Is Using Regional Land Use Layers Built with Limited
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): R. Reilley

Information on current development patterns is crucial for planning orderly and efficient growth. The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) identified business needs for developing land use information in order to better understand future land use needs in the Denver, Colorado metropolitan area.

For the first time, DRCOG will have zoning and future land use information at the regional level that in combination provide detailed information. This project offers several advantages. By compiling regional land use data planners utilize regional definitions ensuring consistency across our nine counties. The data informs questions

concerning infill, transit oriented development, and future land use patters affecting our growing region.

How did we do this with 57 jurisdictions, not enough staff time and limited funding? I’ll briefly explain the data development process and then focus on how DRCOG puts the data to work! The findings should be interesting to GIS professionals and land use planners from regional, county, and municipal planning agencies.
