Creating a Global GIS Strategy: Methodology and Process
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Ewan Peters, Ilka May

It is increasingly recognised that the majority of data relating to people and the environment (built or natural) has a geospatial element. There has been a sustained appetite for using GIS within Arup over the last few years. In order to ensure that growth the GIS Skills Network realised the need to define a global strategy. GIS is an area of growth. It is not an isolated technology, it is technology which ‘joins-up’ and complements existing skills and technology in Arup which use spatial data. There are opportunities across all of the business groups globally with new and existing clients. The drivers to use GIS are not only from the GIS skills network but from Arup staff and external clients who use location based data. This presentation outlines the methodology and the process we used to design the GIS strategy, understanding the business case , user requirements capture and the implementation.
