AbstractPlanning and Managing Enterprise GIS Operations Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Steve Garfield Understanding user workflow requirements and system architecture / infrastructure performance limitations are fundamental in managing GIS operations. Esri provides a new Capacity Planning Tool that can be used to document system requirements and model enterprise system performance and scalability. The Capacity Planning Tool provides a framework for collecting performance metrics and understanding workflow requirements. This paper shares the investment and benefits experienced by CenterPoint Energy staff in using the Capacity Planning Tool to document existing operations. The capacity planning tool was used to document existing workflow requirements, configure existing hardware and network environments, and understand peak user workflow loads and user productivity. Several methods were used in measuring and validating the workflow models. The resulting model became a foundation for hardware planning and systems management and tuning decisions. This report will share the insight and benefits gained from this experience.
