AbstractWind Turbine Initiative—From Concept to Completion Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Rick Wiley This project started as an Alternative Energy study, and progressed into a full-blown project under the SWDIVNAVFACENGCOM umbrella. GIS was used to locate a site for the turbine, verify availability to tie into the electrical grid, and to help alleviate any unknown circumstances. Learning curve regarding alternate energy and cooperation with various agencies/departments/companies was steep. Project is almost complete, with the tower up. As of 3 Feb 09, final tie-ins and a 3 week testing period was all of the major work that is left to be accomplished. The tower is approx 215 feet high, rotor diameter approx 250 feet, overall tower with arc height of approx 340 feet. As we are looking at a couple of different sites for future turbines, the lessons learned from this project will be used to accomplish the future turbine installations.
