AbstractMigrating UN Cartography to ArcGIS Environment Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Guillaume Le Sourd The United Nations Cartographic Section provides page size maps of countries for UN Secretariat publications. While the maps of respective countries have been prepared in Illustrator software for the last 10 years, this presentation reviews the feasibility to migrate the production of theses publications maps from Illustrator environment to ArcGIS environment. For the needs of publications the UN Cartographic Section is preparing general as well as deployment maps (for UN Peacekeeping mission). While the Illustrator format ensures graphical quality the task to produce new maps or update the various maps in a not centralized manner do not allow populating the changes to a wide range of maps covering the same regions. To achieve faster updates/production and with developments of ArcGIS in Cartographic representations, this paper explores and outlines the feasibility of migrating from CAD to GIS environment while preserving high quality cartography.
