Abstract

Geospatial Mapping Infrastructures in Peace Operations
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Francisco Igualada, Francis Mugambi

Modern peacekeeping operations need to move faster and cover larger areas than

ever before in short periods of time as events and crises develop. These evolving circumstances make accurate, up-to-date digital maps or geospatial

infrastructures and satellite imagery-derived information an

extremely critical logistical and planning asset for deployment. Such geo-databases

and maps are among the most relevant sources of information that mission needs to obtain.

Two projects have been performed by GIS Centre, UNIFIL-UNDOF

interoperable geo-database and the Darfur Mapping project. This latter

ongoing work has completed 50% of its initial Phase-1 in central Darfur regions. The

total number of TLMs to be produced will be around 300 and the common geo

databases ensures quality, interoperability and the application of military

standards. Such a workflow using PLTS Defense is delivering

foundation data (Vmap2 NATO standard) needed to better assist in operations

with extra information layers and sound geo intelligence analysis.
