Abstract

Terrain Analysis Support of Groundwater Assessment for Peacekeeping Camps
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Francisco Igualada, Andrea Tonini, Francis Mugambi

The GIS Centre of the Cartographic Section has continued to develop groundwater

assessment methodologies in support of UNAMID GIS Section and Engineering

Section. During this period of time Centre’s resources with engineering geological

and GIS background have been working to set procedures for hydro-geological

workflow through GIS analysis using various types of satellite imagery. Eight Darfur

sites out of the initial 34 were developed as priority basis using optical (Quick Bird,

Aster and Spot) and radar (ALOS, Radarsat) sensors.

To date a number of preliminary geological assessment have been completed

identifying a number of potential locations of interest (LOI’s) selected for field work.

In some areas geophysical surveys are planned using resistivity methods and this

information is integrated into a sub-surface GIS using Esri software and GeoSoft

tools. Fine-tuning of methodologies and GIS integration is progressing consolidating

GIS groundwater support services for peace operations.
