Development and National Implementation of the StreamStats GIS Web Application

StreamStats (http://streamstats.usgs.gov) is a U.S. Geological Survey Web-based GIS application developed as a tool for water-resources planning and management, engineering design, and other applications. StreamStats users can obtain previously published streamflow statistics, basin characteristics, and descriptive information for streamgaging stations. Users also can obtain drainage-basin boundaries, basin and climatic characteristics, and estimated streamflow statistics for user-selected locations Additionally, StreamStats allows users to navigate the stream network to locate upstream or downstream streamgaging stations, dams, point discharges and other water-related features and get information about those features. Most StreamStats functionality is available through Web services. Implementing StreamStats for a state usually requires a local funding partner to share in the cost of processing large GIS datasets. This presentation will provide a general description of StreamStats, a description of the development and implementation process that is used, and a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks to this implementation approach.
