The Curse of LiDAR—Lessons Learned since 2003
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Al Karlin, Steve Dicks, Ekaterina Fitos

To date, the Southwest Florida Water Management District has acquired over 2 TB of LiDAR data, over 11,000 individual tiles, from four of the largest US LiDAR vendors. The District has seen “the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” in terms of vertical accuracy (fundamental and supplemental vertical accuracy), tie-edge matching, data filtering and classification (over- and under filtering), and bore-sighting.

This discussion highlights the current specification, details several of the modifications as they evolved, and discusses the future enhancements. Examples of the data deliverables encountered are compliled into the “lessons learned” over the past 6 years. These lessons include, (1) improved methodologies for quality assurance and project management, (2) enhanced specification of breaklines and planimetric data , and (3) the need for synchronic orthophotography to assist in LiDAR interpretation.
