AbstractOn the Road to a National Hydrological Database for Iceland Track: Water Resources Author(s): Bogi Björnsson, Esther Jensen, Inga Karlsdóttir In the year 2000 the European Union (EU) implemented the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD is water legislation produced by the European Commission and will provide the major drive for achieving sustainable management of water in EU member states. Iceland is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) and voted in 2007 for the adaptation of the WFD with the objective to fulfill its requirements before 2017. According to the directive water resources datasets should be harmonized between neighboring countries and standardized. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will be utilized to manage the data which will be used for policy making in the future. This paper focuses on the authors’ experience of using the ArcHydro water resources data model and ArcHydro tools in creating national datasets for Iceland that meet the requirements of the WDF.
