GIS: Positively Impacting the Property Interests of the World’s Poor
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Craig DeRoy

At the core of land rights held inchoate by the world’s poor is the issue of determining the appropriate level of specificity that is truly required for their description. This presentation will focus on the direct correlation between the level of accuracy required vs. the cost/risk inherent in the technology used to define the property interests and rights of the poor. Before GIS, the world had historically found it too expensive to define land rights in the developing world. In a pilot project in Ghana, we have demonstrated GIS to be an effective tool that can be calibrated to match the need for definition in a continuum of property interests and information affecting land rights of the poor.

This presentation is aimed at showcasing a strategy to leverage the tools of GIS to produce a resulting set of solutions that have not been previously available to help alleviate poverty.
