Preparing an Arc Hydro/GWIS Database for Hydrologic/Hydraulic Modeling
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Jamison Janke

The Southwest Florida Water Management District currently maintains a custom Arc Hydro database called the “Geographic Watershed Information System” (GWIS). Using standard Arc Hydro terrain processing tools and workflows, catchments and surface connectivity (hydro-network) are initially generated from a LiDAR-derived DEM. Using custom Arc Hydro tools, below-surface connectivity is added to the hydro-network. Once all possible surface and below-surface connections have been identified (i.e. the “Spider web”), a preferential flow path tool assists in producing a simplified network for modeling purposes. A similar tool is used to consolidate catchments into model units (i.e. model basins). The GWIS schema has been enhanced to contain these “model” components and to facilitate direct data migration, via XML, into the computer model.
