Interface of GIS and Management Science in Business-Decision Optimization
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Robert Sewell

Business intelligence (BI) and geographic intelligence (GI) commonly intend to inform rational decision-making. Building blocks of BI include tools and methods for selecting / developing metrics and for summarizing data: i.e., charts, tables, statistical analyses, and related elements. Complementary building blocks of GI include maps, attribute tables, geo-spatial analyses, and related GIS tools and methods.

Such elements, however, are generally not sufficient; they can be derived and presented in ambiguous and conflicting ways. In order to formulate optimized business decisions, there needs to be a formal framework to quantitatively synthesize these BI/GI elements -- and the recognized framework for this is management science and associated decision analysis.

This presentation illustrates problems that arise when BI/GI elements are not properly synthesized witin the framework of decision science. Further, in discussing the relationship of GIS and management science, the presentation demonstrates how these two disciplines interface toward developing optimized decision solutions.
