Geospatial Technology & the News Media, and the New Media
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Joe Francica

The fascination of the media with maps and satellite imagery is verified every time we turn on CNN. The goal of the media seems to be that viewers need to be given the “impression” that we are seeing events in real time. Though that is not the case today, we are rapidly approaching a time when it may be possible to capture satellite images very close to the time when events occur as with the recent inauguration of President Barack Obama. As the satellite companies launch newer earth observing instruments while others remain in orbit, we will have better coverage of events on earth. In addition, the proliferation of blogs, Twitter, and social media has contributed to the plethora of news mediums from which to draw location-based content. The result is sometime confusing for readers.

This presentation will explore both new forms of media and the business opportunities that exist.
