Design and Development of a Local Business Virtual Atlas
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Jerry Platt

Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofit agencies often lack

ready access to relevant data regarding salient characteristics of their local surroundings. Such data can provide information that

identifies opportunities, reveals patterns or unexpected relationships, and otherwise supports strategic decisions.

Funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, a project is

underway to construct a virtual atlas for Southern California. The

University of Redlands Business Atlas has been designed to provide

both spatial and temporal information for multiple layers of

attributes, and to encourage visual exploration of relations among

attributes across space and over time. Basic design decisions will be discussed, and benefits demonstrated, providing a perspective for consideration of other local business virtual atlases in other communities.
