GIS in Crop Insurance: Learn how USDA/RMA uses Geospatial Data
Track: Agriculture
Authors: Gregory Oetting

RMA previously used hardcopy paper FCI-33 Actuarial Insurance Maps for business purposes. These maps were very difficult to read and apply correctly, which opened the door for potential abuse. Therefore, RMA decided to start a project to convert these hardcopy paper FCI-33 Actuarial Insurance maps into a Geospatial format using the Esri software. The USDA/RMA choose this solution because they could now create much more precise and accurate maps for distribution, they could use the attributed date within the maps to validate against Insurance Policies, and also help validate their own Actuarial databases. The information that's been generated based on these new Geospatial FCI-33 Actuarial Insurance Maps has been well received by the Crop Insurance Industry and has put validations in place to prevent abuse in the program.
