Abstract

Using ArcPad in International Relief and Development Projects
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Authors: Jeff Eisman

Samaritan's Purse International Relief organization is using GIS to help monitor and evaluate major project indicators in developing countries.
I would like to share how we are using ArcPad software with a Trimble Juno GPS unit to collect project data including project indicators for our water and sanitation projects across the globe. The project data goes from ArcPad into a SQLServer SDE database (ArcGISServer 9.3) where data are used for analysis. The data are also used in map creation, digitally (web application) and hard copy to visually show areas of our work and mapping of the collected indicators.
The outputs are used internally to help with future planning, monitoring project progress and evaluating the effectiveness when the project is complete. Externally the outputs are used in reporting to a Grantor what was done and what kind of change was observed. I believe GIS helps us do more with less.
