Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources

Coastal change analysis, particularly of the variation in shorelines, is critical for coastal disaster mitigation, environmental protection, resource management, and coastal development decision making. Coastal cities cover less than 5% of the total surface area of Turkey, but they have over 30 million inhabitants and are growing rapidly. The Marmara region around Istanbul has the highest population density of all regions. At the same time, more than 60% of the Turkish Gross National Product (GNP) is produced in the coastal strip from Tekirdag to Kocaeli. The study area includes the coastal zone located between the Ahirkapi and Bakirköy along the northern Marmara Sea coast with 20 km length. In this study, these changes were examined by using satellite data from Landsat MSS, TM, and ETM collected between 1975, 1987, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2007. At the end of the study, significant coastlines changes will were detected for a 32-year period.
