Utilizing GIS to Implement ADA Improvements in Pleasanton, CA
Track: Public Works
Authors: Rusty Wynn, Elijah Davidian, William Strand

The City of Pleasanton as part of its Capital Improvement Program hired RRM Design Group to assess all sidewalks and curb ramps within the city's Right of Way and integrate the assessment with the City's existing GIS database (approximately 207 centerline miles of roads and 2,157 street intersections).

One of the challenges was the limited budget for the project. RRM's engineers, surveyors, and GIS professionals worked together to develop a unique approach and methods to streamline the data collection and processing effort.

Field crews used Trimble GeoXH handheld GIS receivers with custom data dictionaries based on ADA's curb ramp survey form.

To maximize efficiency field teams utilized bicycles fitted with baskets to carry their equipment and quickly assess sidewalk deflections or curb ramps.

Attributes of sidewalk and curb ramp features included: location, feature type, ADA compliance metrics (e.g., slope, deflection, detectable warning, etc.) and approximate cost of repair or construction.
