Abstract

Early Development Cost Analysis using GIS

GIS can be used to develop estimates of the costs of multiple development options for exploration prospects. Well spacing, bottom-hole placement, drill center distribution, gathering system alignment, tie-back options, and other spatial factors are inputs. Automation using Excel is used to model drilling, development and production costs in an "engineer friendly" manner. Integration of the results into PowerPoint summarizes and presents the results, with graphical displays of the development options, cost and production profiles, and more. Quantitative results are stored in database tables for query and sorting. With this approach, multiple development options are iterated for multiple prospects for comparison and ranking. This is a prototype application under development for use in Gulf of Mexico exploration. This paper will discuss some of the techniques used for manipulating the spatial features of the development for use in estimates of the development costs and timing, using VBA in ArcGIS, Excel and PowerPoint.
