Abstract

Bexar County Leverages GIS to Engage Community
Track: Public Works
Authors: Jeffrey Booth

When Bexar County, Texas sought to augment its GIS capabilities and engage its constituency in the management and upkeep of its infrastructure, they collaborated with CartęGraph Systems to develop the County's new Service Request Portal. Designed to Bexar County's unique specifications, this web-based tool interfaces directly with the County's existing work management system and geodatabase, allowing users to report issues, initiate service requests, and track the status of existing issues within a given area or jurisdiction. In doing so, the Service Request Portal leverages Bexar County's existing GIS capabilities to provide users a dynamic, mapped view of asset locations, open requests and their accompanying service details. By maximizing the function of their existing GIS resources, Bexar County is not only able to cite the efficiencies that accompany the practice of working geographically; they have also positioned themselves to be more responsive when it comes to the needs of the community.
