GISPRO - A Qualitative Approach to Pipeline Scoping
Track: Pipeline and Gas Utilities
Authors: Geoff Price

From pipeline reroutes to cross-country construction, learn how Chevron Pipe Line uses the GIS Pipeline Routing Optimization (GISPRO) extension to narrow alignment alternatives and enable early phase cost estimates. Social, environmental, political, engineering, and budgetary constraints each contribute to the complexity of pipeline planning. To overcome these challenges, Chevron decision makers recognize sustainable and timely infrastructure planning begins with a heightened geographic awareness. Using proven consensus building methods, engineers rank and weigh spatial criteria to establish a corporate benchmark. As an ArcGIS desktop extension, GISPRO provides a platform to store these qualitative inputs and model a universe of scenario alternatives. Aside from alignment and cartographic outputs, GISPRO reporting capabilities enable pipeline engineers to better quantify pipeline impacts and produce cost estimates for more sustainable and cheaper alternatives. Furthermore, learn how building a routing prototype using ModelBuilder gained management support and proved an invaluable outline for software development.
