Abstract

The Development of 3D GIS Applications for RMIT City Campus
Track: Facilities Management
Authors: Gang-Jun Liu, Darren Yu

This study focuses on 3D GIS applications in supporting pedestrian navigation and asset/space management in 3D urban environment, such as the city campus of RMIT University. Digital floor plans of selected buildings on RMIT city campus, in CAD format, are translated into a 3D geodatabase in ArcGIS. A 3D network dataset connecting rooms, floors and buildings via corridors, elevators, stairs, passages, and paths is developed to support on-campus pedestrian navigations and emergency responses. Selected room-specific attributes are incoporated to support asset / space management and emergency response applications. The procedures developed, solutions to some difficulties encountered, and outputs generated, including some animations will be presented. The study focuses more on the inter-space connectivity within and among multi-storey buildings in 3D urban environment and related applications. This prototype can be easily extended to any urban area with multi-storey buildings when relevant building floorplans and related attributes are available in digital format.
