Abstract

Challenges in multidimensional web mapping
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Paul Sliogeris

With the advent of ArcGIS 9.2, the self-describing, multidimensional format of netCDF commonly used to store weather forecasts and climatological data, became available through the Multidimensional Toolbox. Features, Rasters and tabular data were able to be visualised, manipulated and animated from within the Esri 'stack'. But in terms of exposing netCDF as a web map service, is it really as simple as right clicking in ArcCatalog and publishing through ArcGIS Server? This presentation will highlight some of the pitfalls and successes the Royal Australian Navy's Hydrography and METOC Branch have faced using ArcGIS and Open Source software in trying to serve complex spatiotemporal data - simply.
