Place Type-Oriented Land-Use Simulation for Land Use/Transportation Decision Making
Track: Transportation
Authors: Dohyung Kim

Many important decision makings in land use planning and transportation planning are depended upon the forecasts of future changes on land use and urban growth patterns.
GIS, an ideal tool for modeling and visualizing the future land use patterns, has been employed to analyzed spatial patterns of the future changes.
This presentation will introduce an innovative land use simulation approach that estimates future land use changes using place types which represents prototypical urban spaces. ArcGIS makes it possible to develop the place types, to allocate them geographically, and to compute the amount of the allocated development. By reviewing the land use scenario planning case in North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, this presentation will focus on the development of various land use scenarios and the estimation of land development potential of each scenario using place types. It will conclude with how this approach facilitates collaborative and sustainable land use/transportation decision making.
