AbstractSustainable Feed Supply—A Global AssessmentTrack: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author Livestock is a source of livelihoods for some one billion poor people worldwide offering food, income, employment, insurance, traction, etc. The total demand for livestock products might almost double by 2050, mostly in the developing world, due to increases in population, urbanization and incomes. In the process of answering this growing demand, livestock will use a significant amount of feed, and therefore land, nutrients and water. This paper showcases the integration of global economic and livestock modelling with GIS to develop a global dataset on livestock numbers and feed resources with baseline as well as future projections. They are further assessed in relation to a simple production systems classification. The resulting data allow for inquiry into analysis of challenges and opportunities in the different livestock production systems of the developing world. An overview of methodological challenges and results is given, as well as suggestions for future research.
