AbstractA Universal Presentation Method for Basic Map SymbolsTrack: Cartography and Map Production Author This paper introduces a universal presentation method for basic Map Symbols and symbolization method of these symbols. It uses ordered set of Graph Primitive and correspond parameters to represent symbols. Graph Primitives are divided into two categories: rigid and pliable Graph Primitives, which will deform or not when symbolization. The result of symbolization is not just to visualize it onto device context, but to return some geometry objects with basic styles. The geometry objects include Ellipses, Polylines and Polygons, and the basic styles are just solid pens and brushes; they represent the appearance of features after symbolization. Then they can be drawn onto any device context easily and edited if necessary. Based on this method, we build a map symbol library system with COM component technology, invoking it from ArcGIS, getting the symbolization result, converting them into Features and Annotations, then display and store the map data through ArcGIS.
