AbstractUsing GIS to Protect Public Drinking Water in West Virginia Track: Water Resources Author In 1996 Congress required all states to develop and implement program elements to protect the sources for all public water supplies by adopting Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. In West Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) is developing the Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) program, which is responsible for assessing all of West Virginia's public water systems. Part of the work includes delineating the source area or where water used for public drinking water supplies comes from and inventorying potential contamination sources (PCS) that may impact public drinking water sources. SWAP has finished inventorying PCS sites and delineating source areas for all active drinking water sources in West Virginia via various methods, including extending Esri products' functionality. An enterprise GIS solution, containing a centralized ArcSDE geodatabase and an ArcIMS web application, is adopted so public can be served timely and efficiently.
