Developing Comprehensive Central Geodatabases with PostGreSQL
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Authors: Susan Brunton

As a regional planning agency in Massachusetts, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) is responsible for helping 101 municipalities. In an effort to better maintain and store data between state and local governments, MAPC has developed comprehensive central geodatabases.

The purpose of this presentation is to describe the processes involved in the migration of spatial data stored in various formats into central geodatabases utilizing PostGreSQL with ArcSDE 9.3.1 on a Windows platform.

This presentation will explain the decisions, challenges and lessons that have been learned to setup and maintain the databases in PostGreSQL. It will highlight how the databases have been optimized and configured for internal projects and external web mapping use.
