Virtualization of the Enterprise GIS Environment
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Authors: Qi Dai, Tim Richards

Virtualization has transitioned into a mainstream technology in today's datacenters and is widely used to increase hardware utilization as well as lower server operational costs in the datacenter. United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has made significant progresses with the adoption of the virtualization technology at its National Computer Center (NCC) in recent years. This article will discuss several processes for building successful enterprise GIS environment utilizing the VMware virtualization technologies. This article will demonstrate considerable benefits of building the ArcGIS Server environment with the VMware virtualization technology at the USEPA National Computer Center. This article will present examples of delivering distributed GIS capabilities over the wide area network (WAN) effectively utilizing the virtualized client computing. This article will also review the future plan to improve the virtualized enterprise GIS environment at the USEPA National Computer Center.
