LiDAR Comparison 2000-2007 Understanding the Shelf Life of LiDAR
Track: Imagery
Authors: Hope Morgan, John Lay

In 2000, the North Carolina began using LiDAR technology to develop topographic data for use in engineering studies to aid in the creation of the Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps used by FEMA. This original dataset has been widely used and has provided great cost savings for products derived from the LiDAR. Since the collection of the LiDAR dataset, NCFMP has been trying to understand the lifespan of LiDAR terrain as well as the differences caused by advances in technologies and standards. In 2008, NCFMP ran LiDAR comparisons on three counties from North Carolina that had new data from 2007. NCFMP visualized areas where change had occurred, including land development, population movement, erosion, differences in sensor type.
NC is trying to understand the differences in datasets, techonologies, changes in LiDAR specifications, comparison, usability based on the age of the data, and understanding of change analysis using basic LiDAR comparisons.
