Abstract

Integrating GIS Technology for an Effective Crime Analysis Technique
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Authors: Mounica Kondamuri

Due to a global increase in crime over the last few years, it has become important to visualize certain statistical trends such as the number of occurrences of a specific crime in a specific area. The functionality of GIS over computer mapping has increased crime fighting capacity by visualizing criminal occurrences and identifying patterns.

A study is undertaken on robberies and burglaries in Forsyth County, GA for 2000-2008. The results show that GIS can change how law enforcement agencies can be more efficient in their crime fighting tactics by increasing patrols around such locations or by proactive measures such as removing problematic obstacles that persistently attract high crime activity. The supportive case study will use GIS technology to determine a trend in the number of burglaries and robberies. This will help investigate the problem by helping us relate data spatially and find relationships to make inferences about a problem.
