AbstractA Custom Projection for Lake Powell Designed Using ArcGISTrack: Cartography and Map Production Author A custom projection was designed entirely within ArcGIS software for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCLA), which encompasses Lake Powell. This was necessary because existing coordinate systems such as UTM and State Plane do not provide an optimal solution for many high-accuracy GIS applications due to GCLA's size (over 1.2 million acres), high elevation (average above 4500 feet), and location (in both Utah and Arizona). The custom projection was designed to minimize the difference between its "grid" distances and actual "ground" distances, a desirable characteristic for surveying and engineering applications. Implementing such a coordinate system is facilitated by availability of accurate geodetic control; the National Geodetic Survey is assisting the National Park Service in establishing control throughout GCLA. Using the geodetic control and custom projection with modern GIS technology improves management of park operations, including Facilities, Maintenance, Visitor Protection, Environmental Monitoring, and ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) projects.
