Streamlining Storm Water GIS Data Collection
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Authors: Andrew Rudin

The City of Austin is conducting a comprehensive drainage infrastructure GIS (DIG) data collection project. Maintaining efficiency and quality control throughout the 5 year project has required the implementation of several special applications. ArcSDE provides a central location for data editing operations. Versioning allow multiple editors access to the data. Using custom editing tools, many default attributes are managed by the system, allowing editors to focus on the most important data. Esri Job Tracking (JTX) manages the progress of each document through the research, entry, and QC phases. JTX is an essential tool for progress reports and other metrics. Esri Data ReViewer provides quality assurance; regularly checking for topological anomalies and attribute errors. Data ReViewer also allows staff to flag errors or incomplete data in consultant deliverables and track corrections. Using these components together has eliminated several tedious repetitive tasks for staff, freeing time for better research and data.
