Abstract

Visualization and Photosimulations for Transmission Routing
Track: Electric Utilities
Authors: Matthew Clarkson, Remi Myers

Geospatial applications are used extensively to aid in the projection of new transmission routes. A new development has been the use of three dimensional products in the GIS environment to simulate key transmission features such as line clearance, sag, guy locations and structure footprint. In order to represent transmission facilities in a three dimensional environment, a number of topographic and cultural features need to be available. At a minimum, the national elevation dataset can be converted to a topographic surface for projection; Ortho-photographs are draped over the elevation feature to give the viewer perspective of the route's vegetation, cultural and physical attributes. Transmission features are extracted from existing Cad projects and projected into the model. Project datasets are extracted to standard video format for consumption. This presentation will address, best practices, and lessons learned during the development of three dimensionsal visualization and photosimulations for new transmission routes.
