Abstract

City of Pomona Web Editing: A Cost Saving Measure
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Authors: Patrick Ward, Peter King

As municipalities cope with California's budget deficits and the nationwide economic crisis, the City of Pomona has taken a unique approach by developing a series of Web mapping applications with editing functionality as a cost saving measure. Rather than purchasing several ArcEditor licenses to edit data within the city's Workgroup Geodatabase, individualized applications for seven city departments were developed in order to provide GIS editors write permission only to their department's data. ArcGIS Server's Editing Task allows users to edit versioned feature classes that are present in ArcGIS Server map services via a web browser. As a preventative measure, attribute domains were created which provide users a dropdown list, restricting the selection to predetermined values. Once edits are completed, the GIS Department reviews the edits for accuracy and posts them to the default version. The applications were developed with ArcGIS Server Manager and utilize out of the box functionality.
