AbstractMigration, Immigration, and Innovation Track: Census and Statistical Author Migration within countries and immigration across borders are caused by innovation. At the same time, innovations are fueled by the movement of people. Thus, there is a two-way or simultaneous effect of the movement of people and the occurrence and nature of innovations. This research uses GIS to advance the understanding of this very complex process. We examine various kinds of innovation. Innovation can be either discrete (lumpy) or more fluid. Innovations that occur in processes themselves or in the organization or bundling of existing tasks tend to be of the discrete type. On the other hand, innovations involving of "learning by doing" are more fluid which would make identifying the particular time an innovation occurred more difficult. Movement of people fuels innovation - both in the host country and in the country from which the immigrants came. We use GIS to track the interplay between immigration and innovation.
