Abstract

FCC Initiatives Move GIS to Center Stage in Telecommunications
Track: Telecommunications and Location-Based Services
Authors: Joseph Becker

GIS has always played a role in designing and developing Public Safety Communication Systems particularly for the planning and analysis of RF coverage, interference and frequency assignments.

In recent years, FCC initiatives and mandates have put a new emphasis on GIS and its related technologies and made them critical components of a range of telecommunication advancements.

This presentation will examine the role that GIS plays in: Interoperable Communications - the ability for Public Safety providers to communicate across agency and jurisdictional lines; Broadband Mapping - the initiative to identify current coverage areas and develop solutions for expanding it to all corners of our country; and, Next Generation 911 - the migration to a seamless GIS-based emergency response system.
