Abstract

The Importance of Cartography for the Mining Industry
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Authors: Brett Bingham

Cartography is a method of conveying knowledge in a geographically oriented manner. Information about the past, present, or future can be portrayed through maps. The mining industry relies on maps to explain what is above and beneath the surface of the earth (e.g. topography, existing and proposed disturbance, geology, and proximity to others). The governing agencies require detailed information about the real and potential effects of a particular mine site on the surrounding environment. As geographic information systems (GIS) analyze the intricate pieces to the environment (i.e. vegetation, soils, geology, habitat, and hydrology), cartography can take the required information and exhibit recognizable features as preferred by the public and governing agencies.
