Public Policy Issues Affecting GIS Professionals

As GIS applications permeate our organizational and societal workspaces, an increasing number of public issues affect and are affected by what we do. Professional organizations representing the GIS community are being called upon to monitor and advocate for public action as well as to continue being a focus of GIS education. This overview describes some of the public policy issues our community can and must organize around, including:
• Building Imagery for the Nation, Parcels for the Nation, Roadways for the Nation
• Monitoring and Reporting on NSDI Progress
• Advocating for Funding
• Establishing Fair and Accessible Government Procurement Procedures
• Geoaccounting the Benefits of geospatial applications
• Assuring Access to the Data used by our government
• Monitoring State and Federal Legislation that affects professional roles and practices.
• Monitoring Financial and Social problems for early warning of disasters
• Certification and/or Examination of GIS Professionals
