Abstract

Irrigated Landscape Mapping in Support of Water Conservation Efforts
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Storm Water
Authors: Michael Tse

This presentation will feature a mapping project for City of Pasadena, Department Water and Power (PWP) which aims to improve residential and commercial landscape irrigation efficiency from the results of a detailed land cover analysis from high-resolution aerial imagery. Irrigated area and impervious surfaces are being delineated using feature extraction techniques over 45,000 parcels. The areas of each category by parcel were calculated through Spatial Analyst and ArcGIS geoprocessing techniques. Lot size and irrigated areas were utilized in conjunction with evapotranspiration rates to calculate the parcel-based irrigation water requirement and compared the actual usage of each account to determine the irrigation efficiency. This level of detail in automated image analysis provides much opportunity in the fields of water conservation, stormwater management, and environmental planning. This Project is a joint partnership between the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and PWP.
