Abstract

Automating USA Service Alerts with Mobile GIS
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Storm Water
Authors: Tom Lutgen

Burbank Water and Power is leveraging its enterprise GIS to receive, locate, manage and complete underground service alerts (USA) tickets by internal staff. The system captures the activity of each field visit, including photos of markings, providing enhanced documentation. The result is a streamlined, automated workflow that eliminates troublesome paperwork and disorganized filing.

Locators with laptops automatically receive service alert tickets sent from the USA call center after processing through the GIS system. These color coded tickets are viewed in electronic format, displayed within an easy to use mobile GIS application. As ticket status changes, updates are made to the tickets and automatically synchronized with BWP's enterprise GIS, which is used for storage, analysis and reporting. Paper is replaced with software.

This presentation will provide an overview of the automated USA service alert system, its implementation, and lessons learned; plus a demonstration.
