Abstract

Appalachian Basin Tight Gas Reservoirs Project (ATG) Web Portal
Track: Petroleum
Authors: John Bocan

ATG was a three-year, DOE funded endeavor to encourage, facilitate and accelerate the understanding and development of tight (i.e., very low permeability) natural gas reservoirs in the Appalachian Basin. This collaborative effort of the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey and the Pennsylvania Geological Survey collected widely dispersed data consisting of: scanned, un-scanned and digitized well e-logs and maps, core data and photos, well GIS, well header data, obscure and/or previously unpublished documents and other well reference material.

With this assemblage, we were able to provide a truly interactive, play-based data center for a two-state region whose estimated remaining gas resource potential exceeds 17 trillion cubic feet.

Data delivery methodologies for database, document/image retrieval and complex interactive mapping (163 features in 210 layers using Esri's long-established ArcIMS) were developed into a comprehensive web-based access system which will help users to discover the geologic processes behind the data.
