AbstractPublishing a High-End Retail U.S. Road Atlas . . . Using ArcGISTrack: Cartography and Map Production Author For the past 25 years most of Mapping Specialists published products were created using graphic design software for many of the world's largest publishers. In 2009, we published a monumental product in partnership with HEMA North America employing only Esri technology for the cartography. The "Ultimate United States Road Atlas" is 224 pages of seamless 1:1 million scale coverage of the US, additional coverage of the NE Corridor at 1:250K, 40 cities, and 20 National Park maps. This presentation will examine the software used, why it was chosen, methods for creating and editing approximately 300 custom built feature classes, as well as the cartography, type placement, and publication of the final atlas. Although not yet perfect, Esri's cartographic technology has vastly improved. Esri's software allowed us to keep our workflow moving smoothly, helped to complete the project on schedule, and on a budget never conceivable just a few years ago.
