Abstract

Analysis and Visualisation of Atmospheric and Marine Meteorology Information
Track: Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather
Authors: Martin Rutherford

The dramatic hijacking of the MV Maersk Alabama on April 8, 2009, and the subsequent release of the Captain and crew following intervention by the USS Bainbridge and Navy SEAL Team, has focussed international attention on piracy incidents occurring in the north east Indian Ocean and adjoining waterways, particularly the Gulf of Aden.

A multi-national coalition naval task force designated Combined Task Force 150 (CTF-150) has been established to counter the piracy threat and provide safe passage for vessels transitting through the region.

The anti-piracy activities of CTF-150 are used as a scenario to highlight the capability of Esri ArcGIS and python scripting to access, process, analyse and visualise a wide range of atmospheric and marine meteorological information including; historical observations, current in-situ and satellite remote sensed observations and numerical weather prediction model output.
