Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) are creating an increasing demand for sharing geoprocessing functionality through standardized service interfaces. As most complex geoprocessing algorithms are designed for a concrete geoprocessing platform and runtime environment, it is common practice to re-implement the desired functionality in a specific web service framework for remote access.
To overcome this cost and time consuming practice, we have developed and implemented a new concept for sharing complex geoprocessing algorithms in SDI that allows fast and convenient assembly and deployment of geoprocessing algorithms on a Web Processing Service (WPS). The easily extensible implementation supports several geoprocessing backends like ArcGIS, GRASS, or FME and a number of algorithm containers, like ArcToolbox, Python or shell scripts so far. By applying this approach to some of our projects' use cases, we demonstrate the benefits in rapid prototyping, life cycle management, parallel processing and fail-safe configurations in a web service environment.
