Abstract

Toward an African Agriculture Geospatial Commons Service Bureau
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs

Agriculture is intimately tied to its location in the landscape and, by extension, to key conditions strongly influenced by location, particularly climate, soil water availability and even markets. This link to geospatial factors is probably stronger for agriculture than any other economic sector. The concept of building an African geospatial service bureau captures our aspiration to meet a previously unfilled need of a one-stop source for geo-spatial needs in agriculture.
AGCommons is an initiative providing location-specific information to improve decision-making and therefore productivity and access to markets within the agricultural sector in Africa.
This presentation showcases interesting case scenarios of how the infrastructure developed by AGCommons service bureau begins to shape up the agricultural sector in Africa through improved access to agricultural geospatial information and provision of better local service to farmers for advancement of agricultural productivity and general well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa.
