Abstract

Below Sea Level City Rotterdam Rises unto an Enterprise Architecture
Track: State and Local Government
Authors: Louis Smit

The City of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has envisioned the strength of spatial data since it commissioned the first map produced by public works in 1884. The road to a (digital) enterprise environment has started in 1982, with the first digital map of the city.

Since then the challenge has been putting the enterprise city database to maximum use. A key aspect of this development is the integration of several datasets. The public works department has created a number of unique products, including a high resolution 3D-DEM, historic texture maps and detailed subsurface maps in dense urban areas.

As a local government, the city plays a prime role in the national key registrations program. In this program, geographic data will be maintained at a local level, but shared nationally. The high quality of the data of Rotterdam has been achieved by using ArcGIS, which ensured data integrated, in the enterprise framework.
