Abstract

A Globally Accepted Emissions Accounting System for Forestry and Agriculture
Track: Climate Change
Authors: Fred Stolle

The contribution of emissions from deforestation to global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions has led to efforts to reduce deforestation to maintain and conserve forest carbon stocks. Integrated forest information can help governments around the world make better decisions to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. This paper focuses on how remote sensing and GIS technology can be used as the platform for Forest carbon Measuring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems. Such systems serve to promote conservation and the sustainable management of forests through interagency cooperation, supporting policy creation and implementation, transparency, and more.
